Welcome to rural Vermont. It sounds like you had your first run in with Vermont rednecks. Trust me... not everyone in Vermont is like that. Most of the rude people were probably either tourists or local white trash who were really annoyed with rude tourists. Most people in Vermont are actually very polite.
