A lot of basic back and foot problems are caused by the (unconsciously) modified gait/stride that shoes cause. If you do a comparison, when you walk around with shoes you'll notice that you'll tend to land with the heel. If you walk around in your barefeet or socks (or shoes that mimic barefoot walking while preventing being socially ostracized) you'll notice that you'll land more with the ball of your foot.

Walking in shoes weakens a lot of muscles all the way up to your back and stepping with your heel first fucks up a lot of nerves. When I'm at home, I walk barefoot as much as possible and I definitely notice a difference in mid-upper back problems I sometimes have.
