Just spend 300 on a new dell with vista. best 300 bucks I ever spent. I would say get a PC and not a laptop, as you'd get way more bang for your buck, but it looks like you're pretty set on a laptop. In the thousand dollar mark, you could have a pc with quadcore processor, 4 gigs of ram, and a bitchin video card.
