They're really bright and if paired with the right pickups they sound phenomenal, my red RG3120 was mahogany and it ruled. I'll have to let you play my ESP sometime to check out how the maple fretboard feels. I'm torn between maple (my les paul also has the maple fretboard) or ebony. My dad built a superstrat back in the 80's and it's awesome. His floyd rose trem route was handcarved and looks like absolute garbage, but man that thing can play. I'd love to build my own guitar someday when I'm more financially stable.
