This game rules. I remember playing a newer one that came out after it and being like WTF is this.

FFIII (going by SNES Numerics, not Japan) is definitely one of the best ever. I wouldn't say I like it more than FFII however, which would probably be my vote for best game ever, even though III has multiple endings and free will and more characters, II did even more with less. It dabbled less in cutesy Chocobos and Moogles and Mogs and other kid stuff/cutesy music, sticking with the grandiose and dark moreso. Most importantly, it was character based more than storyline based, never losing focus in the dramatic tale it was trying to tell. While III was cool in that it made you not as focused on Terra as a central character arc in order to widen the roster and expand the possibilities of the stories, II made the gameplayer identify more with Cecil as the story unfolds, creating a greater emotional investment in the game when things actually would pay off. Therefore, I think II edges out III, but that's more a compliment to II than any criticism of III.

I like to use the TNG/DS9 comparison as a parallel - a case where the earlier simpler character driven version is actually even better than the still very good multiple sustained story arc version that came later.
