yes there is, but you're not gonna like my answer. You have to play evenly. That's all there is to it. The reason that it sounds like the DB is missing something is because it is, consistency. That's why most people think triggering is cheating, because they think you can hit as hard/soft as you want and have it all sound the same. You still have to play evenly for it to sound good. I would recommend doing double bass patterns slowly (40-50bpm) w/metronome for an hour a day, and increase the bpm by 10 every week. Focus on the consistency of the hits, and in a couple months your footwork will sound deathmetaliffic!
