Among other things, it lets individual states determine the values they want to have, and lessens the power of the federal government. It's a step to pan-nationalism, so that you could have a very liberal cosmopolitan state (California) in the same nation as, say, a traditionalist one (Texas). And Texas doesn't have to pay for California if it collapses... ;)
