It's got a super warm growly sound, but for actual distorted growl, having the SansAmp in front helps you push the preamp more of the time, and with better sustain. The SansAmp will also let you play a little looser with the dynamics - to get the most out of an uneffected SVT (in my experience, at least), you need to turn the gain up and play pretty lightly, so as not to be constantly triggering the input gate (which doesn't do wonders for the sound when it's constantly on). The SansAmp in front compresses the sound nicely, so you can hammer on it a little more here and there. The way I have mine set up, when I feather the strings it's hot and punchy, when I hammer them (or play chords), it sounds like a Marshall. Do like.
