Fang - Fun band. I remember good old-time hardcore choruses but forget what they were saying. Oh well.

Birds of Prey - Watched half their set. Stoner rock that could have been good but failed, the vocals turned me off, and the first song just flat-out reminded me of Creed.

Sinister - Watched from afar and the guitars sounded huge but couldn't tell the difference between songs. Meh, big fan of Cross the Styx....why bands don't play full albums at shows like this is beyond me.

Asphyx - Couldn't hear Martin's vocals from where I was which is probably the most important part of the band. I was way more into the show last year.

Watain - I could barely tell what songs they were playing. They sound very different live. STTD is somewhat sterile but I'm a fan of Cassius. Enjoyed them a little more last time in Cambridge. I wasn't impressed until they played THE RETURN OF DARKNESS AND EVIL and it was the only part of the fest I stormed the stage and went fucking ballistic. That was the part I felt like I was at a black metal show.

Gorguts - Impressive from afar. The best drumming of the festival.

Naxzul - BORING. I stood right up front waiting to be impressed, had never heard the band before the show. Lackluster outfits and what the hell was they keyboard player doing kneeling over his laptop half the set? Their slower songs were much better because they had a semblance of atmosphere but it was mostly black metal devoid of any attitude whatsoever. Maybe their albums are interesting, I would hope so if they came all the way from down under.

Krallice - More boring black metal with 'orthodox' riffs. Their drummer was fucking amazing, he really hammers and can kill the cymbal accents. But he should get a better band that doesn't stare at their shoes. Deathspell Omega's pissant son.

Jucifer - MEGA BONER. I had no idea who this band was. Banshee calls and strobes lured me inside, and I was in awe. The loudest band of the fest. She made a prostrate fan out of me right away.

Autopsy - FUCK YES. $50 set. Chris Reifert is among the death metal gods. I thought the police chopper was still flying around above but it was just the bass guitar. Apparently they were filming a DVD? Watch out for it. DEAD.

Obliteration - Another FUCK YES. Celtic Frost with waves of dead wind and militant death metal runs with so much power. Can't wait to see them again. My biggest surprise of the fest.

Melechesh - Waiting for them to play on fire in the desert sun under the vaporizer's influence. What a great band. The drums came up short compared to Proscriptor's work on the albums but it was more than made up for with the rest of the band. First show in the US I guess? I thought I heard him say they were going to close with Rebirth of the Nemesis but that even in a democratic country they were told they couldn't play it. I was wondering why they didn't. Lame on many levels.

Pestilence - I was grooving. They sounded great, new songs were meh. Bass player is amazing to watch.

Gorod - Also sounded great. Melodies really came through.

Gridlink - Awesome, these fuckers can grind!! The seasoned bass player's shirt said "Kill Yourself So I Can Grind" and that's basically what they sounded like. I like seeing a whole lot of extra strings in stellar grind bands. Made me a fan right away.

Crucifist - These guys were fucking terrible. Excuse me for being particular about black metal. Cardboard cross? Whatever, you sounded 14.

Necrophobic - Better than Crucifist but still cheesy. Sounded thin from where I was. You get your armor online?

Pentagram - OOOOOoohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Glad we took the time to spin up a few joints before hand. Bobby Liebling really puts on a show and their sound would have blown Sabbath or Zeppelin away. Truly among the greats.

I had a great weekend and can't wait til next year. Hell, I would have drove down just to see Autopsy and Pentagram.
