If JCS officials are serious about downsizing the military, they need to start by looking at the current active conflicts in which we are involved and discuss removing ourselves. Also shutting the doors on some of the 1000+ overseas military installations we currently maintain... A serious suggestion to close down 1/4 or 1/3rd of these would be a real gesture at anti-militarism. The idea of economic streamlining for the military may be beneficial, but until the military starts to advocate an active retreat from the world of empire, we, and the population of the world, will continue to be fucked by the iron fist of American militarism.

As for Obama, this birther "controversy" has not only provided fodder for the right to build upon, but also has served to entangle many liberals/progressives in the defense of "their" president. That and Trump's possible vote-splitting act are the way the powers that be will return Obama to the Oval Office in 2012, despite the abysmal success of term 1.
