"SAN JOSE -- With hopes of salvaging an 82-game regular season, the NHL improved its offer at the bargaining table Tuesday with a proposal that reportedly calls for a 50-50 split of hockey-related revenue and no salary rollbacks. The league has said that the new offer is predicated on being able to complete an 82-game regular season with a schedule that would begin Nov. 2. In the 1994-95 season, the NHL needed nine days from agreement on a new contract to prepare for a revised opening day. With many players, including nine Sharks, competing in Europe, some time is also required for players to return to what would be compressed training camps."
