League Proposes 50-50 Revenue Split

If this goes through, I will shart all over everything everywhere in a fit of joy.

"SAN JOSE -- With hopes of salvaging an 82-game regular season, the NHL improved its offer at the bargaining table Tuesday with a proposal that reportedly calls for a 50-50 split of hockey-related revenue and no salary rollbacks.

NHL Players Association executive director Don Fehr said the union would study the latest offer, hold a conference call with its executive committee at 2 p.m. PDT and get back to the league Tuesday or Wednesday.

The league locked out its players Sept. 15 when the existing collective bargaining agreement expired. It gave players 57 percent of league revenue, but the NHL's initial offer this time dropped the figure to 43 percent.

Details on other contentious issues such as revenue sharing or length of contracts have yet to be disclosed.

But multiple reports from Toronto, where the sides met for the first time in four days, indicate that both sides consider this progress with the potential to be productive.

The league has said that the new offer is predicated on being able to complete an 82-game regular season with a schedule that would begin Nov. 2.

In the 1994-95 season, the NHL needed nine days from agreement on a new contract to prepare for a revised opening day. With many players, including nine Sharks, competing in Europe, some time is also required for players to return to what would be compressed training camps."
