because sports are essentially big business. they are corporations. a lot of money goes into owning a sports team, funding everything, paying the players, selling the merch. sports are a major part of the american lifestyle, from commercialism to rich owners who are friends with the superior upper-class rich people.

who said it's taking precedence? this talk has been going on for a long time now. other issues that congress deals with just don't get the same coverage, because people don't care. infotainment.
a better question is: why does our government care so much about what athletes/would be athletes put into their bodies, yet they couldn't give 2 shits about all the poisons that food manufacturers put into their products i.e. our bodies?
