1) It's "lose"; two o's makes an OOOOOOOHHH sound as in Oodles or caboose. one o makes an Oh-uh-s sound like in "Verbose" or "fructose"
2) That was posted on here already.

better way of saying it: the e hardens the S to a Z when there is one o. When there is two o's, it is softened up again.
