okay, there's a slight possibility I may pick up a Marshall halfstack. It's the 100w 8ohm solid state head. Can't remember the exact model number.
Anyway, I've spent most of my guitar playing days playing out of Crate, Line 6, and Hughes & Kettner.
My Hughes & Kettner head has a short in it I think, and it's the 3rd time i'd be fixing it in a year.
I want to make this into a fullstack..
I've read reviews on this Marshall and they're not too bad.

Would this be a good buy? (it's cheap and in good condition) and would you recommend it?
thanks

junk.

toggletoggle post by largefreakatzero at Oct 15,2008 2:43pm
It's junk, don't waste your money even if it is cheap.

toggletoggle post by largefreakatzero at Oct 15,2008 2:44pm
Awww, isn't that sweet, me n' Tommy shit on the crappy amp at the exact same time.

toggletoggle post by aril at Oct 15,2008 2:46pm
I can't afford anything tube at the moment unfortunately.
it's definitely better than the one I just had (Hughes & Kettner Vortex series).
I just want something that's good for a cheap price right now.

this guy is selling 40% of the amps in the world for weird prices

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Oct 15,2008 2:46pm
my guitar player had a marshall mode 4, and a jcm900. Both of which sounded ok by themselves, but when played with a band you couldnt hear the damn notes he was hitting. Now he has an all tube genz benz, the difference is amazing. I would try to stay away from the marshall if your gonna be playing fast intricate (or even slightly intricate) guitar. It will sound ok by itself, but they just don't cut it with a whole band pumping metal.

the crate blue voodoo isn't too expensive, you can get the 60watt one (which is plenty loud with tubes) for less than 450used. (i think) and it will sound way better with a band.

toggletoggle post by aril at Oct 15,2008 2:48pm
laney oar 100. hmm.. that's gonna go quick

toggletoggle post by brian_dc  at Oct 15,2008 2:48pm
ah man...that guy must have sold a bunch of amps. He had at least 3 other heads last time I clicked that.

toggletoggle post by brian_dc  at Oct 15,2008 2:49pm
it's actual aor...dude fugged up

toggletoggle post by brian_dc  at Oct 15,2008 2:51pm
you might be able to get him down to a lower price. Most of the harmony-central reviews I've seen are $400 tops

toggletoggle post by aril at Oct 15,2008 2:51pm
or here's the deal.
if anyone is willing to sell a cheap/used tube or solidstate head. respond.
this is an asap matter because we've got a show in a few weeks.

toggletoggle post by ouchdrummer   at Oct 15,2008 2:54pm
if your really interested, i think my guitar player wants to sell his jcm900. do you want me to ask? I think it would be cheap, but if i were you i would try to find something tube on craigslist.

toggletoggle post by aril at Oct 15,2008 2:58pm
there's not much tube stuff I can find that's 400 or below.
i'm willing to take a trip to boston guitar works this weekend but I had no luck on their web page..

yeah, i may look into one of these.
also, peavey makes a pretty sweet cheap tube but i forget the model therefore everything i say is [null]

when I said ASAP i mean A S A P.
the marshall guy is a friend of mine and he has about 3 people waiting to buy it. he's waiting for me to shoot him an answer relatively soon.

toggletoggle post by Josh_Martin at Oct 15,2008 3:04pm
Why in fuck would you shell out for a Marshall and get a solid state?

toggletoggle post by aril at Oct 15,2008 3:07pm
$$$

toggletoggle post by aril at Oct 15,2008 3:08pm
if I'd find something better for aroudn 400 bucks, it jumps ahead of the marshall.
thing is, it's coming with a cab as well.

if you balk at it for 50watts, let me just say that wattage =/= loudness. People complained of how loud this is in some reviews.

My Bad Cat is 50w and I have to fight it to not overpower my 100w ENGL

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Oct 15,2008 3:19pm
Well, technically wattage per square meter = loudness but when it comes to tubes, a 100W amp with 4 power tubes sounds like a 400Wish amp. 50W will sound somewhere between 100W and 200W.

toggletoggle post by aril at Oct 15,2008 3:19pm
would that even be worth it for a 15+ year old head?
I know MB makes some great stuff, but wouldn't that be somewhat of a risk..?

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Oct 15,2008 3:21pm
Yes. Old school circuits rule.

toggletoggle post by brian_dc  at Oct 15,2008 3:27pm
I'm thinking about buying a '73 Ampeg V-4 for $400

old stuff can be good

toggletoggle post by aril at Oct 15,2008 3:28pm
I just emailed that Derry dude asking him some questions about that. thanks BrianDC

toggletoggle post by brian_dc  at Oct 15,2008 3:30pm
anytime

I love helping people buy amps. It's the only thing that keeps me from just buying amps for myself

that and money

toggletoggle post by aril at Oct 15,2008 3:32pm
I just want the BEST sounding head for under 400. period. that mesa one seems like it'd be better than a marshall solid state, eh? hah

toggletoggle post by brian_dc  at Oct 15,2008 3:33pm
I have no idea. I live by the try before you buy policy.

Or occasionally the, "buy blindly and then sell again if you don't like it" policy

toggletoggle post by blue  at Oct 15,2008 3:40pm
not going to read this thread, but marshall solid state stuff has got to be some of the worst sounding stuff ever.

great high gain heads under 400:

crate gx-130c
crate stealth
ampeg vh or ss series heads
peavey valveking
peavey 5150 (you can score one cheap once in a while)

toggletoggle post by metal_church101  at Oct 15,2008 3:46pm
I have a peavey valveking. For the money, it is pretty damn good.

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Oct 15,2008 3:51pm
I've played through a Valveking that sounded AMAZING. Stock tubes and everything. With a bit of tweaking, sonic gold.

toggletoggle post by duanegoldstein at Oct 15,2008 4:07pm
valvestate=crap its pseudo tube I actually had to repair one for a friend of mine and all I have to say is Gahbage!! I hate preamp tube/hybrid crap. Go Tube or Go Home!!! Word!

toggletoggle post by aril at Oct 15,2008 5:01pm
