Part of my problem is I'm still listening to 80s and 90s metal. There's so many great newer bands (especially in Germany it seems) that I'm out of the damn loop again.

I guess I'm in the minority in stating that I thought Belus was a little disappointing. A good start for him not plying guitar for a while, and it makes me hope the next is better than Belus. Didn't like the vocals- they weren't excruciating like in then past.

toggletoggle post by beleth  at Jul 21,2010 4:18pm
I won't deny being a bit bummed not hearing those Burzum shrieks, but the guitar work was fantastic. Same riff for 8 minutes or you're a pussy.

toggletoggle post by goatcatalyst   at Jul 21,2010 4:23pm
Integrity and Burzum are definitely up there for me and I agree with Alcest and Nightbringer. I'd also add Watain. Really looking forward to the new Inquisition.

Zoroaster
High On Fire
Black Breath
Nachtmystium

Probably a bunch I'm forgetting, but those were all really solid. Looking forward to the new Unearthly Trance, that should make the list based on what I've heard of it.

it's too bad you don't like this album more, i think so highly of it. His vocals are very different from the shrieking, but they are not far off from Filosofem at all. I think it's a good progression, I doubt he can even do those Hvis Lyset Tar Oss style sounds anymore, but there are parts in this album where you can hear him really getting into it.

Dodsengel "Mirium Occultum" wastes all. Instant classic.

"Belus" is a distant #2 thus far - half of it's great, half of it's garbage, but that's enough in a relatively weak year. New albums from Inquisition and Morbid Angel remain strong contenders. Watain was a disappointment. Nokturnal Mortem's effort was good but certainly not overwhelming. (Ditto new Immolation, Hour of Penance.)

the new massive attack was really disappointing for me. haven't heard a lot of stuff this year outside of metal and electronic that really grabbed me. i've been listening to Sun Ra a lot but that didn't come out this year.

Gorillaz - Plastic Beach is really good.

Non metal albums I've liked so far:

Owen Pallett - Heartland - darkish weird violin pop but very well composed

Pantha du Prince - Black Noise - Atmospheric minimal electronic, again, fairly well composed, nice soundscapes

Eluvium -Similes - piano driven ambient downtempo with very little in the way of percussion. Soak it in.

ah twilight has a new one, did not know.

I haven't heard the new Nokturnal Mortum, Deathspell, Slough Feg, or many others yet....but my favorites for the year are split between

The Meads of Asphodel - The Murder of Jesus the Jew
Ghost - Opus Eponymous
A Forest of Stars - Opportunistic Thieves
Darkthrone - Circle the Wagons
Autechre - Oversteps
Immolation - Majesty and Decay (no new Morbid Angel but this delivers just fine)
Tryptykon - Eparistera Daimones
Melechesh - The Epigenesis

which rise just above a lot of the rest of the mentions in this thread which are all good. while we complaing about how shitty music has become in general, 2010 was an amazing year for music looking back at it.

1. Deathspell Omega - Paracletus
Cloudkicker - Beacons
East of the Wall - Ressentiment
Castevet - Mounds of Ash
Periphery - Periphery
Jaga Jazzist - One Armed Bandit
Shad - TSOL
Sufjan Stevens - The Age of Adz

Converge put out one new track this year and it was pretty awesome, but obviously not enough to make anyones list.

I can't believe Polarity made anyones list, honestly. Couldn't stand that album, and I loved DBW and ATB.

Setherial - Ekpyrosis

excellent album, much better production than Death Triumphant. excellent guitar work, not boring drone with indecipherable riffs like majority of the "black" metal coming out now.
