I don't know about underrated, they're one of the most hyped metal bands in the world, and the overwhelming majority of metal and heavy music fans enjoy them. They're making some good money. And for once, I can feel like this successful band actually deserves it.
i don't think they're overrated, i just think it all depends on musical tastes. anyone who can't get into the music will most likely say they think they're overrated.
i finally got the new album and after listening to it a few times and watching the dvd, i have a lot more appreciation for them. i've been a fan since lifesblood came out, but now i like them even more after seeing how much they work but at the same time how easy it comes to them because they just let it flow.
I can't find anything redeeming about listening to that band.

Mastodon aren't metalcore dumbass.
What are they then?
Hard to describe, but a fusion of classic metal, death metal, some punk and hardcore, prog rock, blues and stoner rock. Vocals are very similar to other bands from their home area like F.U.C.T., early Today is the Day (2 of the Mastodon guys were in TITD and Lethargy at one point) with a touch of early splattercore like old C.O.C., etc.
Their conceptual style for lyrics and artwork theme is a marriage of prehistoric imagery, psychedelia, mythology, and various forces of nature. Their lyrics are heavily influenced by Neurosis, although their music is in a way very busy, and thus the antithesis of Neurosis.
How about a thread like this for Dragonforce or Opeth? Then you'll get my vote.
i still dont see how Opeth is overrated. they are anything but. they have been pumping out fantastic music for over a decade now, and they finally got some recognition, and were immediately lumped into the "overrated" category. i just dont see it.
yea so far im liking the new album minus some of the odd vocals. they have huge sound.
yeah, the track with cyber-vocals kinda bores me. Otherwise, I can dig it.

Opeth had recognition for years, it's just that newbs and bandwagon metal fans (who didn't give a shit about metal in the 90s) didn't listen to them because they weren't popular yet. So they hadn't heard them. And yes, they are overrated.

other overrated bands: dragonforce, and everyone on rttp's favorite band, necrophagist.
whoa, he went after necrophagist! Get him!
Haha, yeah, they probably get jocked more than they deserve. But for good technical death metal that still has some songwriting merit, there just aren't a whole lot of competitors.

i don't really have a problem with necrophagist, but their music does little for me and it seems like everyone gets an unwarranted boner over them like they invented metal.
To my ears, Martyr create much more meaningful and unique music than Necrophagist. I really wouldn't lump them together like that.
It's a shame Martyr aren't more well known and well-loved. They are one of the best active metal bands in the world. But even if they were more popular, people who've heard a snippet of maybe two songs would be coming out of the woodwork to say it was just "technical wankery." Tools.

Martyr is definitely better than Necrophagist (especially that new album). That highly technical style is always going to have a limited following though, just as it always has, which is why people grew up with Ozzy and Manowar and left Watchtower and Cynic on the record store shelf, and Avenged Sevenfold blew up to the teenie boppers and Discordance Axis didn't.
Who cares though, as long as we get to listen to Martyr
for people like me who love all kinds of metal especially Slayer, Cannibal Corpse and Fear Factory, Mastodon is amazing and is the best band after these 3, i think they are actually underrated since none of my friends know them, I have more than 70 albums from more than 50 bands on my pc and i have some cds, but most of the albums i couldnt listen to them all from beggining to end none stop if they are more than 40 mins., but yesterday i listened to Crack the Skye from beggining to end and i still wanted more and the album is over 50 mins. i think Mastodon reached total perfection with their last album
Horribly overrated. Their whole thing is building up into something and instead of landing in a bangy groove, they start building up into something else.
I think what makes them overrated are the bands who have been emulating them over the recent years. I like Mastodon but I don't listen to much of them after Remission or Leviathan.

Eh, I love moby dick but one spin of the Leviathan album was enough from this band for me. Not bad, just not interesting to me.
Leviathan and Blood Mountain and really, really good. They're also more talented and interesting than a lot of the crap out there. I say you should give it another listen because I think your missing something.
I still like Remission and Leviathan and listen to them occasionally, but I can't tell if it's because I liked them in high school or because I really genuinely still like them. Considering I can't stand some shit I used to like, probably more the latter.
I think they're pretty important in the metal scene, they are one of the most pure bands I've ever heard, they're completely true to themselves and they never letup on integrity or creativity, or being hard working motherfuckers. They got the true spirit of Metal, which is lacking so hard in popular realms.

At least they don't go around calling themselves the ''greatest (insert genre) band of all time'' like some other bands do
Most of the "meh" with that band, for me, is because of the drummer.
Drum solos are cool and all, but not when you play them through entire albums. It was really refreshing to hear him hold back a lot on the newest record. Opened things up a lot, and gave some space to the music. Prior to that, I've found his style to be incredibly claustrophobic and over-stated.
I don't think they're overrated. They are VERY good at what they do, and obviously work really hard, but I wouldn't say I'm a huge fan.
I do like a lot of their songs (mostly from "Remission"), but not enough that I listen to them with any regularity. The exception being this:
Mastodon live = "Dude, they've been playing this intro for like an hour and a half now... wtf the show's over?!"

only time i saw mastodon mastodon swas in 2003, in a cold dark warehouse with about 30 people watching. but i remember them being really good. they were solid as hell, and had a great sound. i dont think they were pulling any rockstar shit either. havent followed them much since.
